A session was held on Friday to brush up on rules and get a general sense of how the approach is working.
Due to a critical shortage of referees, clubs have been asked to provide refeeres to control the touch line throughout the year.
It's a trend that will continue into the finals.
"When we come up to semi finals the senior referees will do the middle but we will be asking all the volunteers to run the touchline as an assistant referee," Southern Inland Rugby Referees Association president Brendon Reynolds said.
There are 80 match officials between the senior and junior competitions this season, with only 15 of them senior referees.
New uniforms sponsored by NSW Ports were also distributed.
