Coming off a loss against Tumut last week, the Bulls could have dropped to fourth if things hadn't gone their way at Greenfield Park but coach Kyle McCarthy was pleased with how the team responded to take a 24-18 win.
"It was a good win," McCarthy said.
"It was a tough game early but we completed really well in the first half and that set us up.
"In the second half we were really good again completion wise and solid defensively."
The two sides went try-for-try in the first stanza before Steven Tracey gave the Bulls a 16-10 lead when he scored just before half-time.
Jack Lyons extended their lead 15 minutes into the second half before Jake Dooley crossed for his second to have the Bulls a good buffer.
The Thunder scored a consolation effort through Keanau Wighton to reduce the margin late but McCarthy said the side always felt comfortable.
"They weren't troubling us all too much so we knew that if we kept our defence tight we were going to be ok," he said.
Southcity host Young on Sunday and are out to sure up their top three place while Albury face another tough clash as they look to break into the top three and secure a second chance come finals time.
They travel to Twickenham to tackle Tumut who are now three points ahead of them on the ladder after their win over Cootamundra.
