The Steamers moved around Wagga City on the compressed middle of the Southern Inland ladder after a 31-21 win on Saturday.
They are three points behind Griffith and now one point clear of next week's rivals Wagga City with three rounds to play.
Assistant coach James Kora was pleased with how the side overcame a difficult road trip
"It was an important win for us," Kora said.
"It is always tough going to Tumut trying to get a win."
Tumut started well but the Steamers were able to overcome the early pressure to jump well clear before a consolation effort from the Bulls reduced the margin.
Kora thought getting the likes of Sam Allen and Tom Wilmore in the back line more involved helped turn the tide.
Albury will be desperate to make it three wins on the trot up against the Boiled Lollies with games against Ag College and Waratahs to come before the season is out.
"We've got to keep building from here on in," Kora said.
"Each game is like a final for us and if we don't show up we can start looking at next year.
"We've probably got to win two of our next three to cement ourselves in there plus have a bit of luck go our way as well."
Meanwhile Leeton kept their finals hopes alive with a 43-25 win over Wagga City.
They are now six points behind Albury with games against Ag College, CSU and Griffith to come while Tumut a further two points back.
