Wagga police attended the man's property at Incarnie Crescent about 8.40pm on Monday after family members raised concerns about his welfare.
Inspector Adrian Telfer said officers were confronted with a violent situation as they tried to negotiate with the 39-year-old man to surrender his weapon.
"We were there originally for his welfare and things turned south fairly quickly," Inspector Telfer said.
"We were there for an hour trying to negotiate with this individual, but ultimately we were put in a position where we had to use a taser.
"It was highly stressful for all those involved."
Inspector Telfer said the man, who was the only occupant at the time, also threatened himself.
He has been taken to Wagga Base Hospital for a mental health assessment.
Inspector Telfer said criminal charges are expected to be laid on him later today.
"We followed our procedures, we contained his house," he said.
"Police put themselves in harm's way to ensure that this person is treated for what is a mental health condition.
"The community's safety is also ensured."
About 12 officers attended the incident. The man and the officers were not injured.
