Now, Colleen Atkinson cherishes every moment as her son August goes from strength to strength.
In 2018, just under the age of one, August was battling unexplained temperatures and flu-like symptoms which saw the mother and son travel to Sydney Randwick Hospital to find out the cause.
After extensive tests were run in Sydney, Ms Atkinson found out August had been diagnosed with meningitis.
"The past 12 months, he has gotten a lot better," she said.
"We got the all-clear from the doctors ... he had another scan to make sure there was nothing left."
Ms Atkinson said initially, doctors had been concerned August's development would be slow due to the infection in his brain, but luckily a tendency to compete with his twin, Avon, has seen that fear dismissed.
"Avon started everything first, but now he's right up with him and he's starting to talk a lot better," she said.
The Atkinsons spent a month in Sydney the first time and had to make subsequent trips.
"I was only thinking the other day just how lucky he is, since we got it so early," Ms Atkinson said.
August and his twin celebrated their second birthday on Wednesday with plenty of cake and all their family.
