Wagga City Wanderers have cleared the first hurdle in their quest to keep their season alive with a dominant 3-0 home win over Brindabella on Saturday.

After losing their last five matches, Wanderers coach Ross Morgan said before the game they needed nine points from their next three fixtures, against the National Premier League Canberra's bottom three teams.

The win against the bottom-placed Blues allowed them to move to within five points of fourth-placed Weston Molonglo after they drew 2-all with ladder leaders O'Connor Knights.

Youngster Zach Pinney scored the opener midway through the first half after good work down the left flank from Jake Ploenges and Luke Stevens, before a Justin Curran free kick doubled their lead in the second half.

A Prince Thompson goal with 15 minutes left sealed the result for the Wanderers, who face another must-win home game against Narrabundah this week.

Morgan said the team is now united and on the same page after some mid-season distractions, and Young skipper Duncan Cameron has also returned to the squad as a dual registered player through the mid-season transfer window.

"It seems we've removed the negativity that was in the team earlier in the season, we've settled that midway through and everyone's positive now," he said.

"We created multiple chances and they didn't even have a shot on target.

"Jake Ploenges really stepped up for us, he's probably our most creative players in terms of goals and assists.

"The next two games are important for us to put it back in our hands. If we play like we did yesterday, no problems."

The Wanderers will welcome back Caylum Barber from suspension next week.

Wagga City's under-20s remain a point behind fourth-placed Brindabella after they drew 1-all, while the Wanderers ladies went down 12-0 to competition leaders Belconnen in Canberra.
