When it comes to fighting skin cancer it is vital to have a strong team behind you for diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
With a high rate of skin cancer occurrences in Australia this team is even more vital for people in the Riverina.
Dr Brent Skippen performs simple and complex skin cancer surgical excision and reconstructions around the eyelids and elsewhere on the face.
Dr Skippen lives and works full time in Wagga operating from the Wagga Base Hospital and in several private day surgeries.
"Skin cancer management in the Riverina is a team effort," he said.
"Every day GPs in the Riverina diagnose skin cancers.
"Further management is required and often needs consultation with a surgical specialist or dermatologist for optimal outcomes.
"Pathologists play a vital role in scientific diagnosis and ensuring the cancer has been successfully removed."
Over the past three years Dr Skippen has performed hundreds of skin cancer excisions and reconstructions in Wagga.
Dr Skippen also performs cosmetic eyelid surgery and believes the cosmetic perspective guides all his skin cancer surgical reconstructions. He strives to preserve a natural appearance and minimise troubling scars.
Before moving to Wagga Dr Skippen worked as the oculoplastic senior surgical fellow in a teaching hospital in the United Kingdom in 2015.
During his time there he had monthly meetings with a team of dermatologists, maxillofacial surgeons, radiation oncologists and oculoplastic surgeons to discuss and plan challenging facial skin cancer cases.
Dr Skippen was involved in the surgical reconstruction of these challenging cases.
Subsequent cosmetic facial plastic surgery training in Italy facilitated development of skills and techniques to achieve the best cosmetic surgical outcomes in all his cases.
Dr Skippen is motivated by the academic challenge of skin cancer surgery and has even co-written a textbook chapter on tumours of and around the eye and has published journal articles on eyelid reconstruction following skin cancer excision.
