Kevin Kennedy, 29, was eventually arrested after being cornered in the front yard of a Glenroy home about 4pm, but not before a day of what police called "erratic behaviour".
Acting Detective Inspector David Forland said Kennedy was allegedly driving a stolen black ute when he tried to steal an ATM in Wagga at 6am, before fleeing a petrol station without paying and heading across the Border to Wodonga.
Police started to pursue him, but he went back across the border to Albury, where police were under instructions to not engage in a pursuit.
Despite this, Kennedy allegedly rammed two Albury police cars and one from Wodonga while trying to get away.
"A short time later that black utility has crashed and it's alleged the 29-year-old male driver of that vehicle has then committed a carjacking whereby he has assaulted an occupant of another car and stolen that car," Inspector Forland said.
He said Kennedy allegedly committed three more carjackings in the Albury area, assaulting the car owners in the process.
"We are alleging that threats were made and we are alleging drivers were assaulted," he said.
"I don't believe there are any significant injuries."
When Kennedy allegedly crashed another one of these cars in Ryan Road in Glenroy, he tried to break into a home on St James Place - which police said was to try to find another car - but his run finally came to an end.
He was eventually arrested on foot a couple of houses away at 4pm and taken to Albury hospital for treatment on minor injuries, before being transported to Albury police station and charged with 40 offences.
Kennedy did not front Albury Local Court when his matters were mentioned late on Tuesday morning by defence lawyer Bronte Winn.
"He's not required," Ms Winn told magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim,
"Bail's not applied for."
Ms Winn requested a two-week adjournment so Kennedy could seek legal advice.
Kennedy faces two charge sequences; one of 15 and the second, 25.
These include charges of police pursuit, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, destroy or damage property, car theft, drive recklessly or furiously and aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence with people present.
Several of the charges were laid multiple times.
Mr Abdul-Karin remanded Kennedy in custody to front Albury Local Court on July 30 by way of a video link to jail.
"Very early on in that investigation we established that three people were of interest to us and we set about arresting those people," Inspector Forland said.
"It certainly was an escalation in offending and that's why we put the resources to it. We were able to gain excellent help from Wodonga police, they were on side for the entire operation," Inspector Forland said.
"Our whole goal with these sort of operations is to ensure the safety of the public first and safety of police involved."
