Lamont has revealed he will not seek re-election for another term on the MTC board later this year, bringing an end to an era at Wagga's race club.
Lamont will finish up after 34 years service as an MTC director, the last 15 years as the club's president.
"I've been here for 34 years and I think as far as being president for so long, it's time to hand over to someone else," Lamont said.
"I think it was just a fact that there comes a time really. I thought about it for some time and I think now's the time."
The MTC has never been better position and with country racing thriving, Lamont said he felt comfortable that now was the right time for someone else to take the reins.
"(Racing's) in a really good spot. There's been so many changes, particularly in the last decade," he said.
"The number of physical changes that have happened on the course. You think back to 1985 and the old grandstand and old track. Every building in the last decade has undergone somewhat of a transformation, really, except for the old tote building and the betting ring.
"There's things there that are still to do, there's always plenty to do."
Lamont said he is proud of what the club has achieved during his time on the board.
"I'm really proud of what the club's achieved but we've had some terrific CEOs," he said.
"When you think back to Greg Nichols and then Mick (Sullivan) getting the 100 Club going, which really saved our bacon as far as the Gold Cup sponsorship, and chasing every other race. It just meant you weren't chasing sponsors all year around. Then obviously Christine (Williams) did a really good job and Scott (Sanbrook) did an absolutely outstanding job.
"So there's been some terrific people come through and some really good directors. I think probably the greatest thing has been the respect between the staff and the directors, that's been a really good relationship, which is vitally important for it to run smoothly. And of course we've got the best track manager in the country as well, and that helps."
Lamont will remain busy as stud principal of Kooringal Stud. He has also been elected president of Thoroughbred Breeders NSW (TBNSW) and taken a seat on the board of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA).
The Lamont name will remain on the MTC board through Angus, Stuart's son, who has been a director since 2013.
