The Daily Advertiser reported last month FWW is on the verge of brokering a deal which would ensure a W-League or A-League trial between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets would be played in the city each year.

Both clubs have signed off on official paperwork agreeing to the initiative, which would start with a W-League trial this October.

An A-League trial would then be played next year, with W-League and A-League fixtures to alternate every year.

Securing approval from Wagga City Council is the last obstacle to clear, and the plan is expected to be reviewed at a council meeting in the near future.

FWW president Tony Dobbin said the trials give them a chance to prove they can successfully run matches at Equex Centre, before eventually setting their sights on securing official regular season games.

The NRL returned to Wagga this year when over 10,000 watched Canberra beat Penrith in round eight.

"This is probably being used by all of us - Sydney FC, Newcastle, the council and ourselves - as a 'walk before you run' scenario," Dobbin said.

"I certainly see it that way, because we haven't done this before. This (trial games) is a good way to judge how we go about things without taking huge risks, (but) I would definitely see us trying to get a (regular) season (W-League) game at some point in time."

Dobbin said an A-League match would take significantly more money and investment to pull off.

"A-League involves a lot more money, it's harder," he said.

"But the other side of it is the A-League needs to grow its bums on seats, not just TV ratings.

"It's no different to the Raiders coming here, they do go to the bigger regional areas to try and develop those partnerships.

"We already have had a very strong relationship with Sydney FC for a long time now."
