However, like many places it's more than its reputation and popular television show Back Roads will showcase the people and places which are between Sydney and Melbourne, including Hay, Hillston and Merriwagga.
Presenter Heather Ewart heard plenty of stories about the plains, it's one of the flattest places on earth, you could find the tallest pub bar around or how a horse might walk into the bar.
"I was told about a classic pub a bit further north ...in the little town of Merriwagga," Ms Ewart said.
Well, on the plains, it's the Black Stump Hotel in Merriwagga where you might actually see a horse walk into the bar.
Ms Ewart was told the people of the plains have sense of humour which matches the dryness of the land.
Keen eyed viewers will need to keep an eye out for Lance Anstice who walks into the Black Stump Hotel riding Silver.
Mr Anstice re-created a local legend where his grandfather Roy Little walked into the bar on a horse.
The episode 'Hay and Hell and Booligal' will be broadcast on August 5 on the ABC.
