Now, it's a sell-out. Gus Belling's production The Family Band is being performed by Kooringal High Students this week after months of preparation.
"It's the first time ever that we have sold out a show, so I am really happy," he said.
"I am happy that everyone in the school and community got around it and is supporting us."
Mr Belling started writing the show while helping to put on the school's production last year.
About 200 students are involved, and the musical is centred around two characters and explores themes of betrayal, redemption and ultimately leads to two different journeys told through music.
"I was really inspired during the process of Seussical," Mr Belling said.
"I just started coming up with weird ideas and the next thing lead to this."
The highs of selling out are spurring the production team on, and Mr Belling has big plans for the show.
"For the first time [we get] to tour the show," he said.
"We will be taking it to a school in Coolamon. It's a great way to show what we can do here."
Mr Belling said touring the show for the day will also help give VET entertainment students that much more experience of working on a production.
It was a bit surreal to see his characters and storylines come to life on the big stage, Mr Belling said, but at the end of the day he was proud of himself, the students and the staff.
