Fielding just seven players, the Heat withstood late runs in the first three quarters from the Eagles to secure just their fourth win in 13 games this year.
Their numbers were so dire, coach Matt Bishop suited up as an insurance policy in case players got in foul trouble.
But he wasn't needed as forward Brunell (30 points), captain Zac Maloney (20) and Scott Hare (16) held off Orange down the stretch.
The Heat led by just a point heading into the final term, but Brunell scored 13 points in the last quarter to guide them home.
"Matt had a good solid game for us on the inside, they gave him a lot of attention and he was able to fight through that and put some points on the board," Maloney said.
"I was finally able to find some form again. I've been in a bit of a slump with my shooting and it was good to hit a couple of shots.
"We only had seven guys and Bisho (Bishop) suited up for us, but in the end we didn't need him."
"We were never able to extend it to a big lead, but held solid in the end."
The Heat travel to Canberra on Saturday to take on a red-hot Gunners side fresh from a 35-point road thumping of fellow heavyweights Shoalhaven.
Women's side Wagga Blaze are back in action on Saturday against Camden Valley and Coffs Harbour at a central round in Minto.
Wagga Heat 84 (M Brunell 30, Z Maloney 20, S Hare 16) def Orange Eagles 76 (K Mansell 27, M Selwood 16) at Orange on Saturday.
