Football Wagga (FWW) hopes to raise $500,000 to contribute toward a planned $10 million facelift of their home base, which would included a $4 million artificial turf stadium, through a membership drive over the next two years.
It would also require significant funding from the Wagga City Council and the state government, with the federal government recently committing $460,000 to fund lighting for three more fields.
Smith said the opportunity to help soccer in Wagga take the next step is a cause Henwood Park couldn't ignore.
It brings funds raised by the initiative to $60,000.
"We fully believe in the project and want it to succeed in Wagga," Smith said.
"We're now the highest participation sport in the country and we would have something that's unique to us, no other code in our town has something like this.
"It's an excellent opportunity we've got and if we don't take it now, it may never get off the ground. We may as well jump in fully.
"We (soccer) don't pay players or coaches like maybe Aussie Rules or rugby does, so to put it back into future development was where it was always going to be headed."
