But Matthew Lloyd isn't letting the disadvantage of living in an inland city, or possessing less than a quarter of his hearing, deter him from his dreams.
The 33-year-old is hoping to raise enough money to allow him to compete in the Asia Pacific Deaf Games, to be held at Hong Kong in November.
He qualified for the prestigious event after winning a silver medal with regular playing partner Matt Shannon at the National Deaf Beach Volleyball tournament at Melbourne's St Kilda beach in March.
Fellow Wagga local Shannon has unfortunately been ruled out with a knee injury, with Lloyd to partner with Sydney's Dave Brady.
"I was born with less than 25 per cent hearing and got hearing aids when I was two, I've dealt with it all through life," he said."
"Water sports is the biggest problem, not being able to hear around water.
"I'm partnered up with a bloke from Manly (for the Asia Pacific Deaf Games), and our training's in Manly and our coach is in Canberra.
"It's a different game style with another partner, so we'll have to work out a different skill set.
"Not having a beach volleyball court in Wagga makes it hard."
Lloyd is looking for funds via his gofundme page to help pay expenses that normally fall solely on his shoulders, including coaching/practice fees, travel for training in other cities, accommodation, flights and tournament fees.
Around $900 has been raised, with the overall goal they $6000.
The father of two plays regular indoor volleyball, and says playing on sand takes a major adjustment.
"Going from six players to two is one big thing, also the wind and sunlight factors," he said.
"The rules are also different between the two, which makes it interesting."
Lloyd is aiming for a top four finish at the Asia Pacific Deaf Games which would secure automatic selection for the Deaf Olympics at Dubai or Los Angeles in 2021.
"Representing my country would fulfill a lifelong dream," he said.
"Fundraising has only just started, but we're a fair way off at the moment.
"But getting to the Deaf Olympics would be a huge achievement for me and very exciting."
