The Dragons created a four-point gap on the chasing pack to cement themselves in fifth place at the halfway point of the season with a 20-14 win over Junee at Laurie Daley Oval on Sunday.
The Dragons are now two wins clear of Brothers and the Diesels, plus a further point ahead of Young and Kangaroos.
Coach Sam Elwin thought it was an important win.
"It was definitely a win we needed to get which is very pleasing," Elwin said.
"We spoke about it before the game and it has given us some breathing room but you don't win finals halfway through the season."
Scores were level at 8-all at half-time before a second Rory Block penalty goal plus tries to Block and Elwin gave the Dragons a winning advantage.
Daniel Foley crossed in the finals minute to reduce the margin but it wasn't enough for the Diesels.
Junee were at full strength for the first time while Temora were without Grant Hughes and Jake Milnes.
In his first starting game Paul Ferguson put in a strong performance while Adam Block and Kris Rands also impressed.
Temora now face Southcity on Sunday while Junee hosts Cootamundra.
