The Wagga side led Albury late in the clash at Greenfield Park on Sunday before two late tries thwarted their chances of a third win.
Thunder's stand-in halfback Bronson Meehan produced the ideal audition to retain the role in a thrilling 40-30 win.
The lightweight youngster scored one try and set up four others as the home team scored in the last two minutes to finally put away a gritty opponent.
"He's a young Albury boy and played plenty of halves in his junior grades, I think he's got a great opportunity to play that position," coach Adrian Purtell said.
"You've got to remember he's only young and that's his second start, so he'll improve and there were some positive signs."
His effort was even more meritorious given Purtell was forced off after 18 minutes with a suspected tear in the quad.
Kangaroos went into the break leading 18-12 after a late try to Dumbrell.
Keanau Wighton hit back early on as part of a second-half double before.
The fourth-placed team responded with tries to Etu Uaisele and Liam Wiscombe before an intercept try from Eddie Jackson had Roos back in front with 14 minutes remaining.
However they couldn't hold on for the upset win and now sit in ninth place, winless in the last seven rounds of the season.
They will be desperate for some good news on their leader ahead of a trip to Young on Saturday while Albury hosts Gundagai, the only team the Tigers are yet to beat this season.
