It took the Wagga side a long time to kick into action, but they did just enough to end Albury's four-game winning streak at Beres Ellwood Oval on Saturday.
Will O'Leary's second midway through the second half got the ball rolling before tries to Hamish Pennington and Mike van Diggelen saw Aggies edge ahead 29-22.
It looked like van Diggelen's try was going to be the last play of the day, but there was enough time for Albury to restart play and they were camped on Ag College's line.
Despite repeated scrum efforts the Steamers couldn't hit back.
Even with the tough effort to finish off the game, coach Will Mitchell was far from impressed with the win.
"We were very poor, going away from our structure for 40 minutes of that game and Albury hold the ball extremely well," Mitchell said.
"Our defence was really good at times and then we would just drop off.
"We made things really, really hard for ourselves, coughed up a lot of ball."
Mitchell was pleased with how they turned things around in the final 20 minutes to bring up their seventh win of the season.
Van Diggelen was a standout for Aggies while Duncan Woods, Matt Harris and Ben Brooke had good games in the forwards while Liam Krautz and Tom Boyle provided plenty of headaches.
Despite the loss the two bonus points saw Albury move past Tumut and into the top four.
Ag College holds a one-point lead over Waratahs.
Both sides tackle the premiers in the next fortnight.
