Christopher Rogers, 34, of Junee, appeared via video link in Wagga Local Court on Friday after pleading guilty to intentionally or recklessly damaging property and remaining in a building with the intention to commit a serious indictable offence, namely malicious damage.
Court documents state that on the afternoon of November 27 last year, witnesses saw Rogers picking up rubbish at a Department of Housing property in Junee before he broke the front and side windows.
He then banged loudly on the front door, yelling "open up" before jumping through one of the windows.
A short while later, he opened the front door and walked out.
After walking away from the premises, witnesses called police who arrived shortly to arrest Rogers.
At the station, he became extremely hostile and damaged the plastic section of the dock.
In court on Friday, magistrate Christopher Halburd said the incident is "just bizarre behaviour".
"You climbed through a window and break some glass at a house for no particular reason other than perhaps you were heavily intoxicated, which is not an excuse for your behaviour," Mr Halburd said.
"Your behaviour at the police station again is appalling, especially given that apparently you formed decent working relationship with the officers."
Your behaviour at the police station again is appalling.
- Magistrate Christopher Halburd
Mr Halburd said the only appropriate penalty is jail.
Earlier in the hearing, defence solicitor Marie-Clare Tabuteau said Rogers had been drinking in Wagga before continuing to drink in Junee.
"It is explicable by his intoxication," she said.
Ms Tabuteau also said that Rogers suffered an acquired brain injury in 2007 and that he suffers from epilepsy, as well as neck and back pain.
"He's always accepted that he did the wrong thing by going in there and smashing the window," she said.
"In relation to the damaged property to the dock at Junee Police Station, Mr Rogers said he's very embarrassed."
Rogers' sentence was backdated to December 15 last year.
As the non-parole period was six months, he was eligible for release today.
