The Sturt Highway was closed after the collision that took place near the highway's intersections with Cowells and O'Hehirs Road at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
It is understood another car became involved when a Mitsubishi Outlander and a Kenworth semi-trailer crashed head-on.
The 30-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi died on scene.
It was previously reported that the driver had been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The truck driver, a 47-year-old man, was transported to Wagga Base Hospital for mandatory testing.
A third driver, whose age and gender are unknown, was treated for minor injuries on site by attending paramedics.
NSW Traffic Incident Response have this morning attended the scene to place temporary speed limit signs around the affected area.
Owing to debris and mud left on the ground, the speed limit in the area has now been reduced to 60km/h.
Wagga City Council crews also arrived at the collision to direct banked up traffic away from the area.
A crime scene was briefly established as police gathered preliminary information surrounding the situation.
The full report will be detailed for the coroner shortly.
