The lights and signs are in place near the Wagga racecourse and work was this morning being done to get the solar-powered lights ready to use.
The lights were installed after a history of near-misses between racehorses and cars prompted the Murrumbidgee Turf Club to ask Wagga City Council to back the plan.
Horses cross between the club's race track and multiple stables on a section of Travers Street near the Olympic Highway roundabout that leads to Gobbagombalin Bridge.
MTC chief executive Steven Keene made an in-person appeal to councillors to get approval for the flashing lights, which will operate at set hours of the day - in the morning - at a time when horses are being exercised.
"Muswellbrook (Race Club) have had a similar issues and they have installed lights a little over 12 months ago and they have seen significant decreases in incidents and near misses," Mr Keene told them.
Mr Keene said the lights would make the crossing much safer for stable staff, riders, horses and road users.
"I think the flashing lights will work well just to remind the users of the road that use it every day as well as being handy for those coming from out of town just to make them aware that there is horse movement in the area," he said.
Mr Keene said the lights would be operating from Thursday morning and would be used every day between 4am and 10am.
"It's a big relief. It's been five years in the making for the club," he said.
"Safety is a high priority. This will make it a bit safer for everyone who is involved."
Mr Keene said all that remained was for some road-marking to be completed.
"Muswellbrook lead the way, but it is going to make a big difference in Wagga," he said.
