Most of the residents have grown up there or in a home owned by multiple generations of their family. They aren't just paying for the bricks a mortar, they stay for the close-knit community atmosphere.
And those that live on the city side of the levee bank often wonder, why would you not leave a suburb that floods so often?
The thought of having to clean up and rebuild any time it floods seems almost unfathomable and to most residents, it is not something they have to think of often.
Because most of the city is protected by a levee bank.
North Wagga has its own protection but residents are arguing it isn't enough to fend off the river water when it comes crashing through.
It was not all that long ago in 2012 that residents saw the damage that could be done from heavy rains and dam releases.
North Wagga residents are just asking for the same level of protection that is being offered on the other side of the river.
Floods take a financial and emotional toil on those that are affected.
The city flooded in 1956 and the levee was built to ensure central Wagga was protected in future.
North Wagga residents want the same level of protection and given the suburb is usually the first to under water, it does not seem like too much to request.
But it takes funding and consultation to build a levee, both of which are lacking.
Those that are best placed to say what North Wagga residents need are the ones who live there.
Perhaps it is time for a handful to grit their teeth and give council the feedback they desperately need to alter these plans to accommodate that side of the levee.
It will require give and take from both sides but there is surely an acceptable solution to be reached.
And given the amount of rain recently, it would be ideal to lock in that solution sooner rather than later.
