Mr McCann has just been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the general division in recognition of his services to the Coolamon community.

In 1990, he was awarded the OAM in the military division for his service to the RAAF.

Mr McCann told The Daily Advertiser his latest honour - in the Queen's birthday honours list - had left him "totally surprised".

He said he had been particularly honoured because the OAM recognised his community work, something very dear to his heart.

"I am very much honoured and very grateful to the people who nominated me," he said.

"There are many wonderful volunteers in the community and I would encourage anyone to pick up a pen or open their computer and submit a nomination."

Mr McCann has been on Coolamon Shire Council since 2008. He is the current council delegate to the Coolamon-Junee Police Community Consultative Commission and the deputy chairman of Goldenfields Water County Council.

He is the current president of the Coolamon sub-branch of the RSL and the sub-branch welfare officer and a museum curator.

Since 2000, Mr McCann has co-ordinated Coolamon's Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

A member of the Coolamon Lions Club since 2000, Mr McCann has served two terms as president and is currently secretary.

Mr McCann has been a member of the Coolamon Rural Bushfire Brigade since 2008 and secretary since 2012.

After his RAAF career, Mr McCann made the decision to join the NSW Police Force.

After joining in 1994, he was transferred to Wagga in 1995 and to Coolamon in 2000.

In 2003, Mr McCann was chosen to be part of a group of Australian police officers who were part of United Nations contingent heading to East Timor.

Mr McCann is currently the secretary and treasurer of the Retired Police Association of NSW, which he joined after leaving the NSW Police Force in 2010.

Currently, Mr McCann is using his two council roles to help on a project to "drought-proof" Coolamon shire.
