A BITTER school rivalry usually confined to the sporting field has spilled over onto social media, resulting in the mass suspension of students.

The suspended students, of Kildare Catholic College, were involved in an incident that crossed a line, following their third consecutive Carroll Cup victory against Mater Dei Catholic College last week.
A video of the incident, which was recorded at a private event, has been widely shared on social media.
In response to the incident, Kildare College principal Rod Whelan has sent an apology to Mater Dei students, parents, carers and staff on behalf of the school community.
This type of regrettable behaviour does not reflect the high standards that the vast majority of our students hold themselves to or the expectations of our school communities.

His letter described the incident as "hurtful and offensive" to the Mater Dei community and was "deeply embarrassing" for the Kildare community.
The Catholic Diocese of Wagga Director of Schools for Education Mark MacLean said the video displayed "unsporting and disrespectful" behaviour directed at the Mater Dei Catholic College community.
"The students involved have accepted responsibility for the incident and have been suspended," he said.

Mr MacLean said the principals of both school have been working together to ensure a strong relationship between the colleges will continue to grow.
On behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Wagga, Mr MacLean has extended an apology to the broader community for the students' actions.
"This type of regrettable behaviour does not reflect the high standards that the vast majority of our students hold themselves to or the expectations of our school communities," he said.
