While the train arrived at Wagga Station a little later than the scheduled 3.35pm, residents nevertheless revelled in its sights and sounds.
Among the gathers were Steven Cook and his nephew and two neices.
"We came to have a look around because of the occasion," Mr Cook said.
"My nephew said his pa used to drive steam trains and he's never been on one so he's pretty excited by that.
"They've been at their nan's house and they've been hearing it all afternoon."
His nephew, nine-year-old Max Cook, said he was a "little big fan" of trains and that he was excited to see the historic train after hearing it all day on Saturday.
"I'm excited to get on and have a ride," he said.
On Saturday, passengers were given an hour-long ride to Harefield.
Then on Sunday afternoon, it picked up passengers from Wagga for the final time to Uranquinty.
