Isabella Stephens, of The Riverina Anglican College, said the conversations among the current group of year 12s have been about higher education or a gap year - or two.
"Most do want a year off to travel and celebrate finishing 13 years of schooling or work for awhile before making their next move," she said.
Isabella is one of the students looking to take a year off before heading to university.
"I am a year younger than everyone and I do want to stay home and work before I go into either speech pathology or nursing," she said.
"I am doing TVET nursing, so that allows me to work in a hospital for a year before going to university."
TRAC'S Hamilton McLaren understands that a gap year can have great value rather than jumping straight into a tertiary degree.
Hamilton has hopes of studying a business degree, either in Wagga or Sydney.
"I think it would be beneficial to have a gap year - to work, earn some money and then I will be able to pay my way at university," he said.
Catherine Read, on the other hand, has not considered a gap year.
She wants to go straight into a medical degree at the University of NSW.
"It is something I am passionate about and I want to be able to help people. I have grown up with medicine because my dad is a doctor and my sister is also going through the degree," she said.
"There is also a clinical school in Wagga and that would allow me to come home during my third and fourth year."
