Highway patrol officers stopped a Victorian-registered Holden Colorado while on patrol along the Kidman Highway near Hanwood around 1pm on Monday.
The driver produced a current Victorian licence bearing the condition that he have an interlock fitted, police said.
When asked if the vehicle had the device, the driver produced something fashioned to look like the breath-testing equipment. It was anything but.
"Upon further inspection, it was identified that the interlock was a fake, comprised of a bit of wood wrapped in black electrical tape with a broke generic alcohol tester sticky taped to the wooden block," police said.
"Electrical wires were taped to the device and shoved underneath the dash plastics."
The fake device was seized by police and the man has been issued a court attendance notice for not having an approved device installed and not obtaining a NSW licence.
He has also been accused of living in the state for more than three months without obtaining a NSW licence.
The driver will face Griffith Local Court in July.
