Bradley Jewell, 24, of Ashmont appeared in Wagga Local Court on May 17 after pleading guilty to supplying 934 grams of cannabis and resisting a police officer.
Jewell was given a 15-month ICO with 200 hours of community service for the prohibited drug offence and a 12-month community corrections order for resisting police.
Court documents state that Jewell was driving in Mt Austin about 6.50pm on March 22 this year when police pulled him over.
They spoke to him before he was subjected to a drug search where police found a pink plastic bag filled with cannabis under the bonnet.
Jewell admitted that he intended to supply it to a friend.
Police placed him under arrest and when they tried to handcuff him, he fled on foot.
Police chased and had to use physical force to place him in handcuffs before taking him to Wagga Police Station.
In court last Friday, Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim said that when someone is on an ICO for a like offence, it makes the principles of general deterrence and personal deterrence larger in the sentencing exercise.
"And the amount of drug is not insignificant," Mr Abdul-Karim said.
"I'm willing to give you one final opportunity, but you should be under no misapprehension that if you continue on this path, you will be in full-time jail and there's nothing your lawyer could do to prevent you from going to jail."
Defence solicitor David Baron argued for community service as a penalty.
"My client realising the importance of finding employment because the motivation was being cut off from centrelink...he was in need of finances to support his family and went about it entirely the wrong way," Mr Baron said.
"My client did make full and frank admissions to police at the time before he attempted to leave the scene.
"He said he ran from the police because he was worried he might be taken away from his daughter."
