However three late tries gave the premiers all the momentum heading into half-time and they certainly took advantage of it.
Seb Cottam scored a hat-trick after moving into the centres in the 58-14 victory.
Coach Adam Perry was pleased with how the team responded.
"The first half hour was actually pretty tight, but we got a couple of quick tries before half-time and then the boys started really well in the second half," Perry said.
"It put it out of their reach pretty quick."
Dylan Murdoch picked up a hamstring issue in the clash but Gundagai remain the only undefeated side after the first six rounds.
They are a point clear of Southcity and Tumut after the draw with Albury to start the season.
