In between, Farrer's 17s stormed back into the game and should have been in front at three-quarter-time, but for kicking 4.7 between quarter-time and three-quarter-time.
And they couldn't sustain it when Hume lifted in the last for an impressive win.
"We were way too quiet and obviously not switched on (at the start) but I was really proud of our efforts after that," Farrer coach Craig De Piazza said.
"In the second and third we got on top in the contested footy which was great to see and we had a lot more forward entries but we wasted opportunities.
"But I can't knock the character, they really dug in deep when we were down by four goals."
Hume got on top early in the final term and stayed there, with good early goals to Sam Stening and Ewan Mackinlay before Thomas Newton added two to finish and complete the win.
Baxter Macfarlane shone for Hume while for Farrer, Drew Beavan in the midfield played a good four-quarter game while Mitch Doyle was good in the ruck and Max Tiernan strong across half-back.
