Searching for a sixth straight open division title, Mater Dei dominated from the outset to claim a 26-14 victory in the opening round.
Kooringal High School got off to a strong start with a 31-27 win over Wagga Wagga High School while Wagga Wagga Christian College beat Mount Austin 27-11.
The thriller of the day came in the year seven-eight division where The Riverina Anglican College edged out Mater Dei 27-26 in a rematch of last year's grand final.
Elsewhere, Kooringal defeated Wagga Wagga Christian College 35-25, while Wagga Wagga High School annihilated Mount Austin 55-1.
The second round will be played on Thursday.
