RIVERINA products Alicia Quirk and Sharnee Williams have helped Australia maintain fourth on the Women's Sevens World Series ladder despite a 21-17 loss to New Zealand in the cup final of the Canada Sevens on the weekend.
With the top four teams at the end of the series earning direct qualification for next year's Tokyo Olympics, the result allowed Australia (74 points) increase its lead over fifth-placed France, while closing the gap on Canada (78) and USA (80).
Quirk and Williams were part of the gold medal-winning Australia team when the sport made its Olympic debut at Rio in 2016.
"The final against New Zealand was really tough, but we showed that we can test New Zealand across the park," Australia coach John Manenti said.
"We showed in Canada that this team is really heading in the right direction and we have claimed some valuable series points."
