Name suggestions followed the Forrest Gump theme for the most part with a few ideas left of centre, but the team at the zoo decided on Shrimp.
Manager of Parks and Strategic Operations at Wagga City Council, Henry Pavitt, said the choice of name was as much for fitting the theme as it was for practicality.
"We had a couple of hundred submissions, it's always a pretty popular thing when we have a new baby to name," he said.
"The staff up here decided on Shrimp because it stayed with the Forrest Gump theme, but at the same time it is a little bit easier for training and less of a handful, so it's easier than some of the other suggestions like Lieutenant Dan."
With Shrimp now on the scene, the Gump's previous foal Bubba is moving out of the zoo after spending the past few months in the Alpaca enclosure.
They are accepting adoption applications for Bubba as of now until May 27.
