Ashmont man Nicholas Kevin Taylor, 20, was arrested in late 2017 and could have been eligible for parole on May 13, but he will now spend at least three extra days in custody.
Taylor had pleaded guilty and was convicted of 15 offences in December 2017, including two counts of stealing a car, aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence and resisting a police officer.
He appeared in Wagga District Court on Thursday for sentencing when his lawyer tendered his letter.
Judge Gordon Lerve said he was set to give a backdated jail sentence with an early release date of next Monday.
However, the letter prompted an adjournment to allow the defence case to be reopened. The next date availability for the matter is next Thursday.
