Cunningham's career best season came to a sudden halt in Brisbane on Saturday when he suffered a torn adductor in the Swans' loss to the Lions.
The prognosis is not good for the Turvey Park junior, who faces six weeks on the sidelines.
"I think it's about that six week mark. Probably six to eight. We've got a bye in six weeks so hopefully I'm back for the second half of the season," Cunningham said.
"I think we take on the Hawks after the bye so hopefully I'm right then but it's one of those things with injuries, you get given a time, sometimes you can beat it, sometimes you can't. I'll see how we go within the next couple of weeks and keep trying for that six week mark."
Cunningham had averaged a career-high 22 disposals over the first seven rounds to be among Sydney's best. He is more frustrated that he cannot be there to help Sydney try to climb off the bottom of the AFL ladder.
"Yeah, it's probably more frustrating that as a team we're one (win) and six (losses). Although I was doing ok individually, I'm a bit filthy that I can't help the team get another win and keep progressing forward and help the team be where we want to be," he said.
"That's what I'm filthy on the most. But with injury comes opportunities for other players so whoever comes in this week has the opportunity to play, play well and hopefully get a couple of weeks at it considering I'll have a bit of time on the sidelines."
Cunningham, who is out of contract at season's end, was happy with the consistency to start the year.
"I was playing some good footy and what I was doing well was probably backing it up week after week," he said.
"Whether it was playing a role or adapting to different positions...I was confident how I was going and helping the team out so yeah flattening to go down now but I'm confident when I do get right, I'll be able to get stuck back in and play some good footy pretty quickly hopefully."
Cunningham is confident the Swans will turn their season around, starting against Essendon on Friday night.
"We'll look forward to this Friday night. I think what's been costing us is our contested footy numbers have been down. We got smacked in the weekend on that and inside 50s, I don't think you can win a game when you don't get a W in inside 50s," he said.
"We've been playing good footy for half a game, two and a half quarters but we haven't put four quarters of good footy together yet. If we do that, that's when we can really start getting some wins and playing the brand of footy we want for longer."
