Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud announced the injection of money at Wagga's Charles Sturt University Campus on Wednesday.

"It supports two-thirds of our agriculture production," he said.

"So today, we are announcing $3.1 million in funding to improve genetics in bees and also improve the actual understanding of bees and the role they play in the chain of agriculture.

"It's important that we get this right."

Mr Littleproud said there is an under-supply of bees and the funding will go to AgriFutures.

"It is important that we continue to make this investment to ensure that agriculture production will hit $100 billion by 2030," he said.

"We will be working with AgriFutures to ensure in conjunction with the industry that we get this right in improving the numbers, improving the genetics and improving agriculture production."

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the announcement of the funding was fantastic.

"This announcement I am sure is going to delight apiarists," he said.

Mr Littleproud said they will be giving AgriFutures the future of distributing the funds.

"It will go right across the nation," he said. "This builds on $5.2 million that we have previously spent to build up the bee industry and making sure there is a greater understanding of the importance they play.

"It's about improving the genetics..to get better productivity to feed not only Australia but the world and we produce the best food and fibre in the world.

"We should be damn proud of it."

Charles Sturt University Vice-Chancellor Andrew Andrew Vann said it was wonderful to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture to the Wagga campus.

"It's been a great opportunity to show off the facilities at CSU and the wonderful partners we are working with in agriculture innovation," he said.

"We are working really hard to support the industries in the Riverina and it has been great to show the minister what we have been doing.
