Kirby will nominate Hayne Plane for next week's $170,000 Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) after he scored a front-running victory as the outsider of the field.
Wagga jockey Michael Heagney made a mid-race move to the front on Hayne Plane ($81.00), who ran his rivals ragged to claim the $25,000 William Farrer Hotel Country Cup (2000m).
The win may have forced the hand of Kirby to throw a nomination in for the time-honoured Wagga Gold Cup, to be run on Friday week.
"I'll think about it. I don't think he's up to that class of horse but I didn't think he was up to that class today neither," Kirby said.
"My partner (Debbie Prest) would love to have a horse nominated for the Gold Cup so I will nominate him for it, but I won't expect to get a draw in it."
Hayne Plane kicked strongly in the home straight to win by one length, with Wagga stayers Class Clown ($7.00) and Zarlu ($5.50) running into second and third.
Kirby admitted Hayne Plane's feature win had caught him off guard.
"Can I be honest? Yes," he said.
"His last few runs haven't been the best but he loves the Wagga track. He's a horse that's finicky, he does what he wants to do, he takes control of the jockeys most times. Today (Michael) rode him a treat and you can't ask for no more than that."
"I tried to put him in 1400s because he pulls, to take the pull out of him but he won't try. Put him in a 2000 metre race and he tries his guts out."
Meantime, a number of Wagga trainers enjoyed success in the final meeting before the two big days of the carnival next week.
Coolyboss ($3.00) scored an impressive maiden win for Gary Colvin, while the Trevor Sutherland-trained Jungle Book ($4.40) broke through for his first victory. Both were ridden by Blaike McDougall.
Chris Heywood and apprentice Josh Richards finished the day with a win with Kruanui ($4.40).
