The five-year-old mare finished powerfully to take out the Michael Inglis Flying (1000m) at Murrumbidgee Turf Club on Tuesday.
Warragul ($4.60) was first up from a spell and let down with a blistering turn of speed to win by 2 lengths from Diamonds For Alice ($8.00) and Mixed Blossom ($9.00).
It was Warragul's fourth win from 16 starts and Thompson was relieved to see the mare return in such fine style.
"She's probably the best horse I've ever had," Thompson said.
"I've always thought a heap of her, she's just always had issues. It's been one thing after another.
"That's the way you've got to ride her."
Wagga apprentice jockey Stacey Metcalfe saved Warragul for one crack at them, much to Thompson's delight after the mare was ridden upside down at her last start at Flemington.
Thompson will now consider a crack at the Town Plate with Warragul.
"I'll see how she pulls up but if she does ok, I might back her up in the Town Plate," she said.
"She would get no weight, say she draws a nice barrier, why not?"
Tumut galloper Bondo hit the line well for fourth, while Wagga sprinter Takookacod finished eighth, beaten five lengths, after starting the $2.30 favourite.
The nominations for the two big days of the Wagga Gold Cup carnival come out on Friday.
