Rising electricity prices frustrate us all and the pressure is on householders to manage their bills.

There are a many ways to reduce energy costs around the home without compromising your lifestyle. But the simplest and cheapest is to upgrade your home to energy efficient LED lights. You'll save money at the flick of a switch.

If you are still using outdated and inefficient halogen downlights you need to be aware how much extra you are paying.

Halogen downlights use up to 88 per cent more electricity than LED ones.

Government incentives to switch

The NSW Government is offering subsidised replacements for residents to encourage people to change over to LEDs.

It is now rewarding households making the positive change by offering unlimited LED upgrades for homes that will effectively slash electricity costs overnight.

If you have ten or more downlights in your home you can have them all changed to LED for less than $50.

Andrew McLeod, managing director of Accredited Power Saver, the leading approved company under the scheme, said a qualified electrician will visit your home, remove your halogen downlights and install LED downlights, all for a $49 booking fee if you want the standard downlight replacement.

"There are no strings attached," Mr McLeod said. "One of our fully qualified electricians will provide and install all the new LED downlights. We remove and responsibly dispose of all your old halogen downlights."

Other options including GU10 LEDs, which do not require transformers, or premium Luminaires LEDs with a large diffuser and brighter light are also available at heavily subsidised prices.

How much will you save?

On average, a halogen downlight costs $35.13 per year to run while a LED costs just $4.21, an 88 per cent saving.

Put simply, if you have 25 downlights converted to LED you can save over $773 a year on your electricity bill, with this one simple and cheap change.

Adding to their appeal, LED lights have a 16-year lifespan compared to just a few years for halogen, and they emit a warm white light.

To take advantage of this deal you need to have at least ten existing halogen downlights to be eligible.
