The premiers led 34-6 early in the second half before the Cherrypickers stormed back into the contest with four straight tries at Alfred Oval on Sunday.
Saul Lealaitafea crossed with 10 minutes to play to reduce the margin to four points, however the Tigers regained their composure as Mathew Lyons crossed for his second try to ensure a 38-30 win.
Coming off an up and down performance in the draw against Albury to start the season, Gundagai coach Adam Perry was pleased with the first 50 minutes.
However he admitted the last 30 left a lot to be desired.
"We started to drop the footy, gave away a heap of penalties and they took advantage of it," Perry said.
"We were good for about 50 minutes then stopped thinking.
"We stopped thinking about playing footy."
However he was pleased they were able to stem the tide of points with the late try to get out of trouble.
Joel Field was strong up front for the Tigers while captain Luke Berkrey, who crossed for a double, was another good performer.
Aaron Slater made a real impact off the bench especially after the Cherrypickers lost Kyle Richens and Haydn Cowled to injury.
Nayah Freeman also injured his shoulder late.
It was Young's second straight loss under new coach Roy Jewitt.
