The petition calling on Wagga City Council to take action has gathered almost 3800 signatures since it was put online by Barry Carne water ski race committee member Jactina Evans.

"Everybody is starting to come out now and speak up. It is a bit of the talk of the town at the moment," Mrs Evans said.

"Everybody wants council to find a solution and find it now.

"The mayor has been talking about the Riverside precinct but what about the lake?"

The Barry Carne committee had to scale back its annual event due to water conditions on Lake Albert, which has also suffered from blue green algae.

Mrs Evans said the size of the lake's contribution to the Wagga economy justified spending on larger projects to improve its water.

"The lake brings in $42 million a year for the community," she said.

"If you pump in water, it has paid for itself." 

The petition will remain open until a community meeting next month with councillors during the Barry Carne weekend.

Wagga councillors have supported the aim of the petition but warned about the difficulty in obtaining additional water allocations when demand was so high from the agriculture industry.
