Fashions on the Field is an integral part of the race day with five categories for racegoers to compete in Lady of the Day, Man of the Day, Stylish Couple, Young Contemporary and the Millinery Award.

Former Face of The Carnival and Racing NSW media executive Julieanne Horsman shares her top women's racewear trends set to be worn by the front runners.

"The pants suit tops the list of hottest racewear trends for the autumn and winter season," she said.

"It's welcome news for fashionistas who appreciate comfort as much as style and perfect for the cooler weather in Wagga around early May.

"The number one fashion trend for the season pairs perfectly with the number two trend - felt wide-brimmed hats.

"For luxe inspiration check out Australian designer label Ralph and Russo...but for something that's more affordable look no further than Wagga's own Dianne Barbour Millinery."

Ms Horsman said other trends of the season included bows and animal print.

"Bows here, bows there, bows everywhere," she said.

"Add a Victorian touch to your outfit with a neck bow, cinch your waist with a scarf, thread a ribbon through the button hole on your jacket and create a bow at the front or attach two ribbons to a brimmed hat and tie them in a bow at the nape of the neck for a nod to the trend.

"Show you're the queen of the Wagga Gold Cup jungle in leopard, cheetah, tiger, zebra or snake print. Keep it chic by sticking to just one garment of animal print."

Ms Horsman said if an animal print dress or blouse sounds like too much, try the trend on with shoes, bag or millinery.

Her final tip was to make the colour of the season shine in your ensemble.

"Burnt orange is the colour of the moment and instantly modernises any outfit," she said.

"Celebrities and international models have been wearing this more mature shade of orange for months and now it has finally begun to hit our stores.

"The colour works well with cream, black, navy and burgundy and suits almost everyone."

In Man of the Day the judges are looking for a clean well-cut suit with well polished shoes, a hat is not essential but must be felt based. Overall look should be focused on 'raceday' fashion rather than a business look. It is all about accessories, such as binoculars, umbrellas, hats and racebooks.

For the Stylish Couple the judges want complimentary styling, including colour coordination. Outfits must be appropriate for an Autumn carnival. Hats must be felt based, but a gentlemen's hat not essential. The pair must be well - groomed with attention to detail.

The Millinery Award has judges are looking headwear to make the overall statement and still compliment the outfit. A focus on overall, well-groomed look with attention to detail. Hat or headwear with a winter influence is essential such as fur or wool.

In the Young Contemporary section, the judges want fashion with an edge, a "stand-alone" look. Being on "trend", that is displaying this season's fashion statement. Clever use of accessory co-ordination hat or headwear with a winter influence is essential.

In the Lady of the Day, the the judges are looking for an overall elegant statement with accessories to complement each other and overall outfit such as handbag, gloves, hosiery etc. Hat or headwear with a winter influence is essential.
