The victory was highlighted by two goals from the experienced Adam Raso, with Tolland only getting one into the net thanks to a solid save from United keeper Jarrod Sillis.
The match started off slowly at the Mia Sports Field as both sides worked to shake out the off-season cobwebs.
It wasn't until 20 minutes into the match that the game's deadlock was broken and Raso scored his first for the day.
He got his second soon after and almost secured a hat-trick when he found the back of the net again, but the goal was disallowed.
Coach Frank Alampi was impressed with the side's efforts in the first half.
"It did take us a while to get going, the first 10 minutes was pretty slow," he said.
"After that we found our rhythm and we were playing some good football.
"We were well on top at the end of the first half."

However, after the half-time break, United came out sluggish and that's when errors were made.
While they still secured the victory, Alampi said the team needed to play a more consistent brand of football.
He said there were many positive signs in Sunday's opening round.
"We did lose our way in the second half," Alampi said.
"They (Tolland) were probably a bit fitter than us and it was hot.
"We just went away from how I know we can play. We stopped doing what we're good at."
With one or two players expected to miss this weekend's upcoming clash with Cootamundra, Alampi said the team would be working on several parts of its game plan at training this week.
"We'll focus on what we need to do to improve," Alampi said.
"Overall, it was good to start the season with a win, but there's plenty we need to work on."
The referees' man of the match went to Leeton's Conor Edenden, while United's coach's man of the match was awarded to Jake Shelton.
