On the back of his national juniors gold medal in the 100m on Thursday, he clocked a personal best 21.81 seconds to rocket into the medals of the 200.
That was more than half a second quicker than his heat, when he finished second in 22.35s, which was only the seventh fastest qualifier for the final.
The final was won by Queensland's Reece Holder in 21.55s with Conor Larranaga Boyle from Western Australia second in 21.79.
The Australian titles were Okerenyang's major focus after injury late last year, after his win in the AFL grand final half-time sprint, interrupted his summer.
