Former Turvey Park coach Truman Carroll has been training with the Bombers but is taking a cautious approach before deciding whether to commit to playing.
Carroll battled osteitis pubis last year and the struggle to get the best out of his body was behind the decision not to pursue a second season in charge of the Bulldogs.
Marrar coach Shane Lenon has faith that the former Ovens and Murray League footballer can get his body right in time to be a boost to their premiership defence.
"He has been training with us," Lenon said.
"But he's been in and had a hernia operation. And he had a lot of trouble with his groins last year.
"I think the hernia operation is about a 10-week recovery and we're hopeful that he can play in the second half of the season.
"But the main thing is he's got to get his body right."
If he does just that, Lenon has no doubt Carroll will be "pretty handy for us".
The Bombers have lost a wealth of talent and experience after last year's second straight grand final
After claiming premierships in all three grades last year, they are banking on youth and the progression of emerging stars in their bid for another flag.
Carroll's ability and leadership will be a significant addition if he overcomes his injury concerns.
