A Queensland man died on Thursday night after the vehicle he was driving collided with a B-double, flipped and burst into flames.
The 63-year-old was behind the wheel of a Mazda ute, towing a Morris Minor van on a trailer, when it made contact with the truck at Sweetwater Creek Bridge at Mullengandra just after 8.20pm.
The ute flipped, landing onto its roof and caught fire. The man died at the scene.
A rescue helicopter was called in to airlift the truck driver, a 46-year-old, following treatment at the crash site.
He has been taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition, having suffered head and back injuries in the collision.
Murray River Police District officers were still at the scene investigating the crash on Friday morning and the northbound lanes of the highway are expected to remain closed for much of Friday.
Recovery crews were working to get the truck's trailer, which was carrying lettuces and cauliflowers, out of the creek on Friday morning.
