The Wagga side were thrashed 30-4 by eventual winners Tumut after winning their three pool games.
Despite a less than ideal end on Saturday, coach Peter Little was pleased with the side's performance overall.
Especially with three Riverina under 23 representatives among a stack of regulars out.
"I really happy," Little said.
"We are missing nine first graders from our squad so I'm really pleased with the guys who turned up.
"It would have been nice to make the final on the way we played but Tumut were too good."
They now have their annual trial against Coogee next Saturday before heading to Twickenham to play the Blues in round one.
Gundagai were the only side to lose in the pool stage and make the finals, but found Southcity too big an obstacle twice.
