Goulburn was real bogey side on their way to Waratah League Division 1 success last season, but the girls were able to overcome them to score a 55-46 on Saturday.
With everyone out to knock off the premiers, coach Peter O'Leary was pleased to start in such positive fashion.
"We got the monkey off our back," O'Leary said.
"We didn't beat them last year and we have already this year so it was a good start."
To make things even better the Blaze went on to victory without their US imports.
Shakera Barnes and Khiani Clark have arrived but are both awaiting clearance from Basketball Australia before they can take to the court this season.
In their absence O'Leary was thrilled to have so many contributors.
"We've got a really good mix of girls this year," he said.
"It was good we're not relying on one, two or three individuals.
"What is really pleasing about the game on Saturday was pretty much off all of the girls almost scored equally."
Newcomber Abby Favell, Madison Clyne, Abbey Morton and Steph Male all scored eight points.
New centre Hannah Ryan impressed, top scoring with 14 points.
O'Leary was pleased with her efforts.
It wasn't as good news for Wagga Heat with the men going down to last year's grand finalists Sutherland in their first game of the season.
With the new-look side struggling with injury they fell to a 69-54 loss.
Scott Hare top scored with 14 while US import Matthew Brunell (12) and captain Zac Maloney (11) also reaching double figures.
They will be looking to bounce back at home on Saturday when they host Orange on Saturday.
The Blaze have to wait another week with their next game also on the road against Queanbeyan on March 23.
The Yowies scored a one-point win over Shellharbour to start the season and with a strong Canberra Capitals influence O'Leary expects they will be tough competition.
"That should be a good test for us as Queanbeyan have a lot of ex Capitals and Capitals development players in their side so we will be playing elite basketballers," he said.
