Some of the country's most promising softballers arrived in Wagga for the three-day championships at French Fields.
Riverina finished the opening day with two draws and a loss.
Riverina drew 4-4 with Western and 3-3 with North West.
The two draws were split by a 10-0 loss to Sydney West.
Riverina sports coordination officer Terry Willis said it was a very competitive start to the championships.
"We had a fantastic day. It was a bit warm but it was clear weather," Willis said.
"Sydney West are going to be really strong. Our girls had two draws and then lost to a really good side.
"It's a high standard of play and it's set it up for a really good next two days."
Sydney West were the standout team from the opening day of the championships, winning all three games. They conceded just two runs, while hitting 31 themselves.
Play continues on Tuesday morning from 9am.
