He will be a feature of this year’s Bendigo Bank Tumbafest thanks to the committee wanting to add something extra for children, while highlighting the town’s new pump track which was opened recently.
This is the first time an attraction like this has been added to the Tumbafest program, proving the event is about more than just music.
Cam White will ride on the track with the kids, teach them some skills, talk about safety and reducing accidents, plus do some big tricks on the three-metre high ramp he is bringing.
“I’m excited to hit the ramp and show some tricks,” Cam said.
Cam spent 14 years living in Las Vegas and competing in major tournaments and competitions in America and Europe.
Since moving back to Australia he has done shows, coaching and gone to schools doing talks on bike safety.
He’s looking forward to sharing his knowledge with the next generation at Tumbafest.
“I will ride the track with the kids and give them a few tips and hints on general bike awareness and ways they can learn everyday bike skills,” he said.
When it comes to turning riding into a career Cam said it can be difficult.
“It’s definitely a hard slog for a career,” he said.
“If you're having fun and you can make a career out of it then you’re living the dream.”
BMX is a very “active sport” and has lots of different styles which appeals to a range of different people.
“There are so many styles of riding and different styles of tricks,” he said.
“BMX does appeal to a lot of kids and it’s a lot of fun.”
Cam said having fun in BMX should be every rider's main goal even if they’re looking to become professional.
“Be yourself and have fun,” he said.
“If you’re trying to be someone else or be real serious it takes the fun out of it.
“Companies who are looking to sponsor riders want people who are having a good time.”
The event is free to attend and will be on Saturday, February 23. Children need to bring their bike, helmet and safety gear.
“It’s open to all levels and all ages and will be a good fun day,” Cam said.
